Other zooplankton that can be found in a sample include:

  • Fish eggs (image 1 & 2).
  • Fish larvae (image 3 & 4).
  • Juvenile fish (image 5).
  • Other eggs (polychaete etc) (image 6).
  • Platyhelminthes (parasitic flatworms) (image 7).
  • Juvenile cephalopods (octopus). (image 8)

 

There are many other items that can occur within a planktonic sample, including:

  • Phytoplankton (plant plankton).
  • Bacteria-generally associated with marine snow.
  • Faeces of various zooplankton species (faecal pellets).
  • Marine snow (natural remnants of the decomposition of dead organisms).
  • River-borne or air-borne particles that end up in the sea (human-mediated material, pollen, plant seeds, dead insects etc).
