Image Key
This image key provides a rapid, image-based method for identification of zooplankton taxa using photographic images. This key goes to major group level for a wide variety of zooplankton taxa and to species level for the common species in the region.
How to use this key
There are two ways to navigate through the image key:
1.
You can navigate through the image key by clicking on the start button below, and clicking on the images that best resemble your specimen.

Please note:
- The scales on the photographs are presented in µm units. Please note that 1000 µm is equal to 1 mm.
- During zooplankton sampling care was taken to ensure that collection did not stress the zooplankton and consequently distort their appearance or destroy their soft bodies. Samples were processed and images taken as soon as possible, as we aimed to capture the natural appearance and colouration of the zooplankton.
- Zooplankton are often preserved prior to sorting and identification, so we have also photographed and represented preserved specimens of some taxa for comparison. Please note that where a preserved animal is photographed this is stated in the caption.
- The preference for zooplankton sorting under a microscope varies, so in some cases specimens are represented both on light and dark backgrounds.
- When identifying zooplankton natural variability and variation due to preservation techniques do exist. If your specimen does not appear to fit within our image key it is recommended you identify your specimen via the diagnostic key for a definitive result.
