Size
- Male: 0.93-1.56 mm.
- Female: 1.05-1.61 mm.
Distinguishing characteristics
- Cephalosome is teardrop-shaped and rounded anteriorly.
- Caudal rami are longer than urosome (Giesbrecht 1892, Bradford-Grieve, 1999).
Male
- Urosome segment 4 is longer than the anal segment.
- 5th leg 5 terminal segment relatively long and rather broad.
Female
- Terminal seta 2 of the caudal rami is thick and asymmetrical.
- Swimming legs compact.
- 5th leg with the inner spine on the terminal segment considerably shorter and thinner than the 2 terminal spines.
Distribution
- Epipelagic (down to 200m).
- Recorded from tropical, subtropical and temperate coastal waters of the Indian Ocean, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. South-eastern Tasmania (Nyan Taw 1978), New Zealand (Bradford - Grieve 1999).
Ecology
- Tolerates a wide range in salinity, temperature and chlorophyll concentration.
- Often prominent in tropical estuaries (Ara 2002).
- Little is known about its life cycle.
