Size
  • Approximately 1 mm long.
  • Males are much smaller than females.
Distinguishing characteristics
  • Appendages reduced and not enclosed within carapace.
  • Eyes relatively large.
  • Body tear drop-shaped, oval or triangular, without well defined constriction.
  • Lacks groove that separates head and carapace.
  • Only 4 thoracic appendages.
  • Males typically have a larger head and compound eye relative to the body than seen in the female.
Distribution
  • Widely distributed throughout the world.
  • Common in coastal waters and can also be found in open ocean systems.
Ecology
  • Feed on dinoflagellates and tintinnids.
  • After copulation the female lays only one or two large fertilized resting eggs, which are stored in the brood chamber.
