Remote seabed mapping reveals marine pests spread

November 2009

High-technology seabed mapping has shown that long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus rogersii), which are a threat to Tasmania’s seaweed and kelp forests, have not spread to the environmentally valuable sponge beds located in deeper reefs off the state’s coast.
Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) researchers have been using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) to map important marine habitats off the coast of Freycinet, Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula.

Tasmanian Scientists Win a National Award for Website

September 2009

Tasmanian scientists have won a national award for their educational CD and web-based interactive guide at the annual Whitley awards, held today at the Australian Museum in Sydney.

The “Guide to the Marine Zooplankton of south eastern Australia,” gained a Whitley commendation certificate for the best CD ROM Electronic Guide.

A new project by the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) aims to explain to Tasmanians exactly what climate change means to them.

TAFI, a joint venture between the University of Tasmania and Department of Primary Industries and Water, has been awarded a Tasmanian Community Fund grant to implement the Coastal Climate Change Range Extension Database and MAPping Project (REDMAP).

Tasmanian salmon farms well prepared for climate change

The Tasmanian salmonid farming industry is well placed to adapt to the challenges of climate change according to a report released today. 
The study identifies key climate change information needs for the industry, scopes the likely impacts of climate change and identifies several solutions and opportunities for adaptation.
