Our History

imageTAFI was established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania. The expertise and facilities of the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) and the University of Tasmania are largely complementary.

The TAFI Board is chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW) and includes representatives from DPIW, the University, the aquaculture and wild fisheries industries, and a representative from the community. The Board meets four times per year in different research locations around Tasmania. Meetings focus on the development and implementation of an R&D strategy that ensures resources are allocated to maximise the benefits to Tasmania’s marine industries.
